These interactive activities are designed for students like you to help with career exploration in health sciences careers. Interviewing for a Health Program Prepare for your upcoming interview with this online, non-credit short course. Learn about the interview process and how to best prepare for a successful experience. Topics covered include topics such as questions to ask, questions to expect, what to bring, and how to dress. Learn more here about Interviewing for a Health Program.
Personal Statements for a Health Program Use this online short course to create a draft of your personal statement. Learn how to get started, what to include, and do's and don’ts. Uncover strategies for presenting yourself and your experience in the best way possible. Discover why they are used by admissions committees. Examples are provided and discussed. Planning for Medical School Considering or planning on going to medical school? Whether you are still trying to decide on medical school, or even if you have made a firm decision to go for it, this online short course can help. Complete this short course individually from campus or home, at your own pace, in approximately 2 - 3 hours. After completing the "Planning for Medical School" online short course, attend Action Plan Coaching Session where you will receive counsultation and feedback from a Health Careers Center staff member on your personalized action plan. Action Plan Coaching Sessions are held in-person or are arranged via phone/computer. Step 1: Planning for Medical School (online short course) Register here and begin working on the Planning for Medical School online short course. Step 2: Action Plan Coaching Session (in-person) Prerequisite: Completion of the Planning for Medical School workshop and completed action plan. After completing the Planning for Medical School online short course (above), register for an Action Plan Coaching session. Bring a printed copy of your completed action plan to this session. Advance registration for this session and completion of the Planning for Medical School short course are required. These sessions are held in-person or are arranged via phone/computer. (top of page)
WORKSHOPS Gaining Experience for a Health Career Wondering about where to start gaining experience...or how to get started? Learn about health-related volunteer, research, and other opportunities which will help you get ready for a health professional program and, ultimately, a health career. After this workshop, you will have a better idea of the kind of experience that will be best for you. Learn about great experiences in hospitals, clinics, community organizations, research labs, and even abroad. Register and get started today...why wait? (top of page) AMCAS: Applying to Medical School Those of you submitting applications to medical school this summer may have questions about the AMCAS application process: from how to categorize your coursework on the form to establishing the best timetable for yourself and knowing how to plan for secondary (supplemental) application materials. We discuss the dental hygiene major, course pre-requisites, the program curriculum, transfer coursework, and the application process. Dental Therapy Information Sessions Dental therapists are licensed oral health professionals who practice as part of the dental team. They provide basic preventative and restorative treatment to children and adults, under the supervision of a dentist. Learn about this emerging dental role at this information session and learn about the schooling and preparation required. Dental School Advising Sessions Learn about the Dentistry program at the University of Minnesota through an in-depth information and advising session. Receive individualized advising on getting started towards this career path. Sessions are approximately 1.5 hours long. The sessions include: a 30-minute presentation about the DDS application process and information on becoming a qualified candidate; a 30-minute question and answer advising session; and a 30-minute tour of the Dental School. (top of page) Nursing (MN) Information Sessions These information sesssions focus on the Master of Nursing (MN) program, which is geared for those individuals with recognized baccalaureate degrees in areas other than nursing and wish to become registered nurses. All MN Information Sessions will be held in 4-180 Weaver-Densford Hall. To assist you with the important decisions you will be making, hosting numerous events throughout the year for prospective students. (top of page) Respiratory Care Information Sessions Learn about careers in Respiratory Care at an information session. Representatives from the U of M Rochester campus will share a presentation and answer questions regarding this career path and the application process. The Respiratory Care curriculum includes clinical experiences at Mayo Clinic Rochester and Mayo Heath System. Dates: TBD. (top of page) Scientific and Technical Communication Scientific and technical communicators work with physicians, scientists, researchers, engineers, and other experts to gather information about a product or service. They then transform complex information into language that audiences can understand for use in brochures, web sites, online documentation, multimedia, or videos.
