Veterinary Medicine

9:00am - 12:00pm (approximate time)

Join us on the University of Minnesota St. Paul campus at the College of Veterinary Medicine. You will try your hand at conducting a physical exam on one of the resident four legged friends.  Explore the Leatherdale Equine Center along with the horses and assorted animals who are training or rehabbing an injury.  Hear from admissions staff and students on how to get into a Veterinary Medicine program.

Medical Doctor: Cardiology*

The heart is a unique organ. Learn more about the work of cardiologists as well as professions in the field of cardiology.  During this SGM, react to the health problems of our computerized simulated patient during a cardiac case scenario. Step into a research environment at the U and you might have a chance to hold a human heart in your hand.  Hear what is needed to pursue these career paths from medical school students and staff.

*Due to high demand, students may sign up for only one (1) of the three (3) "Medical Doctor" sessions. Please note that the "Medical Doctor" sessions will have some content that will be repeated.

Sports Medicine Careers

Sports medicine is a broad field with careers relating to the care, treatment and prevention of sports related injuries.  Career areas you might explore within sports medicine include: clinical medicine, physical therapy, kinesiology, sports nutrition, orthopedic surgery, athletic training, and sports psychology. Join us as we view an orthopedic surgery and chat with the surgeon.  Explore the human performance lab and hear from students and professionals from a variety of sports career areas.

Nursing

This very hands-on program will introduce you to the many tools (EKG, pulse oximetry, catheter, vital sign measurements, and more) and techniques that are important in the nursing profession.  Learn from students and faculty more about the nursing profession and what it takes to enter nursing school and become an RN.

Dentistry

Participate in hands-on activities that give you a taste of the day-to-day life of a dentist.  Experience the high-tech teaching and learning environments of the School of Dentistry. Admissions staff and students from the school of dentistry will help you understand what it is like to be a dentist and what it takes to get into dental school.

Medical Doctor: Surgeons and Specialists*

8:30 - 12:00pm (approximate time)

Being a surgeon is a challenging yet rewarding career path.  This program will introduce you to the life of a surgeon and the many areas of medicine one might specialize in. You will view a live surgery via videoconference, having the opportunity to ask questions and carry on a conversation while a surgeon performs an actual procedure.  You will step inside an OR and practice your suturing skills while also getting “hands-on” with the tools used in a minimally invasive surgery.  Insight from medical students, medical school admissions professionals, and surgeons, will help you understand what you need to do in high school and college to enter this competitive, demanding, but very rewarding career path.

Physical Therapy

1:00 - 4:30pm (approximate time)

Doctorate of Physical Therapy students will introduce you to the “tools-of-the-trade” by using ultrasound, electrical stimulation, thera-band exercises, assistive devices, and many others. Learn about the different career areas and opportunities within physical therapy.  Find out how to best prepare yourself for admission into PT school.
