Applying to a Health Professional ProgramFree Online Non-Credit Short Courses Congratulations Gustavus students! You’re on your way to applying to a health professional program. Now that you’ve made the decision to go for it, it’s time to put your best foot forward when hitting the “submit” button to turn in your application. Gustavus Adolphus College along with the University of Minnesota’s Health Careers Center have teamed up to offer you these tools. We offer non-credit, online short courses, designed to help you with various application elements, which are required by many health professional programs. Whether it’s the interviewing process or personal statement writing, building your portfolio of experience, or just planning for medical school in general…these online, short courses are designed to assist you. Each of these can be done on your own time, at your own pace. You can access them 24/7/365. They are interactive and will ask you to do some work along the way, such as creating an action plan or writing a draft of your personal statement. Personal Statements for a Health ProgramWriting a personal statement when applying to a health professional program can seem like a daunting task. This hands-on, non-credit, online short course will give you the structure you seek in preparing this important piece of your application. This short course provides general strategies on how to write your personal statement which is required for application to most health professional programs. It discusses why admissions and selection committees use personal statements, what to include in a personal statement, and strategies for presenting yourself and your experience in the best light. By completing the exercises in this short course, you will have a complete draft of your statement. And with that completed draft of your statement, you can have your personal statement reviewed by a Gustavus Career Center staff member. Take this short course and get ready to write! The admissions committee will use the interview to find out more about who you are as a person. It will give them an opportunity to meet you in person and to ask you questions about your application and personal statement. Even if you are familiar with the interviewing process, this online, non-credit, short course will help you better understand this important step in your application to a health professional program and give you strategies to help you prepare. The short course is customizable depending on what stage you are at in the preparation process. You can start it today and finish it later. With continual access, the time you take to complete it depends on you and your schedule. Want personalized feedback? After you have finished the Planning for Medical School short course, you have the opportunity to complete your Pre-Med Action Plan and create your medical school application checklist, you will then have the opportunity to receive personalized, in-person feedback from a Gustavus Career Center staff member on your own individualized plan.
