AMCAS: Applying to Medical School

If you are submitting your application to medical school, you may have questions about the AMCAS application process, which is the general application used to apply to most medical schools in the U.S. From how to categorize your coursework, to establishing the best timetable for yourself, and knowing how to plan for secondary (supplemental) application materials...this information session covers many topics you may have questions about. We will review the entire application process and provide you with information on how to plan for a strong application.

Sessions are offered in person, between March – May of each year. Session location is 2-565 Moos Tower (Health Careers Center).

Dental Hygiene (BS) & Dental Therapy (MS)

Dental Hygiene (BS) & Dental Therapy (MS)

This session will include information on application procedures, admission requirements, and career information for the Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program and the new dual degree Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene/Master of Dental Therapy program. This session will last 60 minutes total, with a presentation followed by a tour of the dental school.

 DH/DT Re-applicant Workshop Dates and Times: 
Students who would like information on how to make a more competetive application are welcome to attend a DH/DT Re-application Workshop. This session wil help you to identify the strengths and weaknesses in your application and what you can do to improve your application. This is not an individual advising session and it does not include a tour.

First Time Applicant Advising Session - Dates and times:
Learn about the Dentistry program at the University of Minnesota through an in-depth information and advising session. Receive advising on getting started towards this career path. Sessions are approximately 1 - 1 1/2 hours long. The sessions include: a presentation about the DDS application process and information on becoming a qualified candidate; a question and answer session; and a tour of the Dental School. Re-Applicant Workshop - Dates and Times: 
For students who will be re-applying to the DDS program and woud like information on how to make a more competitive application are welcome to attend a DDS Re-Application Workship. This session will help you to identify the strengths and weaknesses in your application, and what you can do to improve your application. This is not an individual session and it does not include a tour. 

Health Services Management (BASc)

Health Services Management (BASc)

The University of Minnesota Bachelor of Applied Science in Health Services Management (HSM) program offers a well-rounded education with an emphasis on acquiring knowledge you can apply immediately. The health care industry provides career opportunities for students who want to make a contribution to the health of individuals and communities. Health services managers plan, direct, and coordinate medical and health services.

Medical Laboratory Sciences (BS)

Learn about the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program at the University of Minnesota! This program was formerly known as Clinical Lab Science (CLS) and underwent a name change in August 2014.

Come to this session and have all of these questions answered:

Learn about the field of Medical Laboratory Science (CLS) and the application process for the CLS program for at the University of Minnesota. Sessions are approximately one (1) hour in length.

The University of Minnesota School of Nursing offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program. The program is located both in the Twin Cities and Rochester.

Rochester: Students who transfer into the BSN program will be located in Rochester on the University of Minnesota-Rochester campus.
Twin Cities: Students who begin as part of the Freshman Nursing Guarantee program will be located on the Twin Cities campus.

Information Sessions are available for both the Freshman Nursing Guarantee program and the transfer process for the BSN program. Visit the School of Nursing website for more information and a schedule of upcoming sessions.

These information sessions focus on the Master of Nursing (MN) program, which is geared for those individuals with recognized baccalaureate degrees in areas other than nursing and wish to become registered nurses.

Explore occupational therapy as a career choice at these sessions. The session includes a definition of occupational therapy, career outlook, career preparation, options for health careers and course planning strategies.

The University of Minnesota does not have a PA program. However, the U of M is a great place to prepare for a Physician Assistant program! If you are interested in attending an PA program information session, you will need to explore colleges and universities outside of the U of M which offer this graduate-level program.

Pharmacy (PharmD)

The admissions counselors for the College of Pharmacy hold 90-minute sessions (including question/answer time) that provide information about pharmacy career options, in-depth detail on the admissions process, and tips on putting together a competitive application. Following the 60-minute information session, there is an optional 30-minute tour of the College of Pharmacy. The sessions are designed for people at any point in the preparation process.

Preparing your PharmCAS Application
Get in to pharmacy school with a strong PharmCAS application! An experienced Admissions Counselor from the University of Minnesota will provide information about PharmCAS timelines, coordination with supplemental applications and how to avoid major delays and mistakes on your application. There will be a specific focus on the important sections of work experience, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation and the personal statement. You will leave this session ready to put together a competitive application and submit your complete application early.

Learn about the opportunities in the field of physical therapy and the U of M program in physical therapy during this special information night called "The Education and Career of a Physical Therapist", located at 202 ChRC (Children's Rehabilitation Center, 426 Church Street SE, on the Minneapolis campus). Offered once a semester, typically in April and November.

Veterinary Medicine Information Sessions and Tours 
An information seminar designed for prospective students, including a tour of the Veterinary Medical Center, is held once a month in the afternoon. This session is intended for any prospective student, including high school students, college students, and those looking to return to school or change careers. Please call 612-624-4747, or go online to register for an upcoming session.

Individual appointments with a member of the College of Veterinary Medicine admissions team can also be arranged by calling 612-624-4747. Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
